The cheapest Asia + Europe plan that covers it, for the coverage selected by default. Your phone counts a little differently from the network, so keep some margin. More in our guide: how much data do I need?

Why Switzerland is different

Switzerland sits in the middle of Europe, but it isn’t in the EU or the EEA. The European Commission lists where Roam like at home applies: the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, plus Moldova and Ukraine. Switzerland isn’t one of them, and the Commission warns that roaming outside that zone, data above all, can be expensive.

Some providers add Switzerland to their roaming deal anyway. Others charge per megabyte. Look it up before you cross the border, not after the first bill. Or skip the question and scan an eSIM at home.

Your eSIM for Switzerland: Salt and Sunrise

Switzerland doesn’t have its own plan in our shop. It’s covered by our regional eSIMs, and on every one of them you’re on Salt or Sunrise, both with 5G. Swisscom isn’t on these plans. We’d rather say that here than have you find out on a mountain.

Is that a problem? In the 2025 connect network test, Swisscom came first, Sunrise a close second and Salt third. All three scored high, and Sunrise had the top mark for voice. Switzerland is a country where even the third network is good.

Which Switzerland eSIM to pick

The buy box on this page shows every plan that covers Switzerland:

  • Asia + Europe 54: the default. Switzerland, most of Europe and much of Asia on one eSIM.
  • Europe (41) and Europe 49: for a trip through Europe.
  • Europe 55 + US: if the United States is on the route too.
  • Europe 41: also covers Switzerland, but it stops when the data runs out.

The others keep you online at 128 kbps after the data: slow, but enough for messages and maps.

Tip: a smaller Europe plan isn’t always cheaper for Switzerland. Europe 33 and Europe 38 don’t cover it at all, so check the country list before you buy. Our route planner does that for your whole route.

Where you’ll use it

  • Zürich and Geneva: trams, ride apps, train tickets and maps. Most of your data goes here.
  • Lucerne: the lake boats and day trips into the mountains.
  • Interlaken and the Jungfrau region: cable cars, hiking routes and the weather forecast, checked twice a day.
  • Zermatt: lift maps and a lot of Matterhorn photos to upload.
  • The trains: your timetable and tickets live in an app, so keep a screenshot of the ticket just in case.

High in the mountains, signal can drop away on any network. Download offline maps and your hiking route before you head up.

How much data for Switzerland

Two weeks of normal use (maps, messages, socials and train apps) comes to about 8 to 9 GB, so 10 GB is a safe choice. If Switzerland is one stop on a longer trip, size the plan for the whole trip. The table above has today’s prices.

The rules in full

Before you buy

Does EU roaming work in Switzerland?

Not by law. Roam like at home covers the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, plus Moldova and Ukraine. Switzerland isn't on that list. Some providers include it anyway, so check your own plan before you go.

What's the best eSIM for Switzerland?

There's no Switzerland-only plan in our shop. The buy box starts with Asia + Europe 54, and you can switch to Europe, Europe 49 or Europe 55 + US. All of them run on Salt and Sunrise with 5G in Switzerland.

Which network will I be on in Switzerland?

Salt or Sunrise. Your phone picks the strongest. Swisscom, the biggest Swiss network, isn't on these plans.

Can I use SBB FreeSurf on the train?

FreeSurf works with the Swiss mobile subscriptions SBB lists, so on a travel eSIM the train ride uses your own data, like anywhere else.

When should I install it?

At home, on wifi, a day or two before you fly. The plan only starts counting when your phone first connects in Switzerland.

What happens when my data runs out?

On the 3 GB plan and up you stay online: speed drops to 128 kbps, enough for messages and maps. The 1 GB plan stops when the data is used up. Need more? Order another plan in two minutes; it comes with its own QR code.

How does Unlimited work?

You get 1 GB a day at full speed. After that it's 5 Mbps until your daily allowance resets: enough for maps, socials and video calls. Then the next full-speed GB starts.

Can I keep my own SIM for calls and texts?

Yes. Your home SIM stays in, our eSIM does the data. Turn data roaming off for your home line and you won't get a surprise bill.

What if it doesn't work?

If it won't connect because of a fault on our side or the network's, we fix it with you. If we can't, you get your money back or a new eSIM, your choice. Never installed it? Full refund. The full rules are in our terms.

Travelling further?

One eSIM for the whole trip: these also cover Switzerland.

Or a local eSIM for the next country in Europe.
