The cheapest Vietnam plan that covers it. Your phone counts a little differently from the network, so keep some margin. More in our guide: how much data do I need?
Three networks, one eSIM
Most local SIM cards in Vietnam give you one network. This eSIM has all three big ones: Mobifone, Viettel and VinaPhone. Your phone connects to the strongest and switches by itself.
Which is best? It’s close. In Opensignal’s August 2026 report, Viettel won the most awards, with Mobifone just behind. With all three on one eSIM, it doesn’t really matter to you: if one is weak where you are, the next one usually isn’t.
5G, and where you’ll be on 4G
Viettel switched on 5G in October 2024 and VinaPhone followed in December. They started with the provincial capitals, airports, seaports and big tourist sites, and have been building out since. In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang you’ll often see 5G. On the road and in the countryside it’s mostly 4G, which is fine for everything except big downloads.
North to south
Most trips run the length of the country, from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City or the other way round. A few things about data along the way:
- The far north (Ha Giang, Sapa, the mountain loops) has long stretches between towns. Download offline maps and your route before you set off. On the Ha Giang loop, several networks to choose from is worth a lot.
- Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay: on a boat you’re further from the masts. Save the big uploads for when you’re back in port.
- Night buses and trains: the sleeper between Hanoi and Hue or Da Nang is a long ride through the countryside. Keep your entertainment offline.
- The cities are where you’ll use the most: Grab or Be for every ride, translating menus, and maps for the alleys of the old quarters.
How much data for Vietnam
Two weeks with normal use (maps, ride apps, messages and socials) comes to about 8 to 9 GB, so 10 GB is the sweet spot. Three to four weeks is closer to 20 GB. The table above has today’s prices for every trip length.
When the data runs out on the 3 GB plan or bigger, you stay online at 128 kbps: slow, but enough for messages and maps until you buy more.
Going on to Cambodia or Laos?
Vietnam is often half of a bigger trip. Crossing into Cambodia or Laos? One regional eSIM is often cheaper than two or three local ones. See Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia or the full Banana Pancake Trail for today’s prices.

Before you buy
Is an eSIM allowed in Vietnam?
Travel eSIMs are widely used by visitors to Vietnam. Ours connects to Vietnamese networks the way roaming does: you don't buy a Vietnamese SIM, and there's no counter to visit.
Which network will I be on?
Mobifone, Viettel or VinaPhone. Your phone picks the strongest. Signal weak in the mountains? Choose another one by hand in your network settings.
Do I get a Vietnamese phone number?
No, it's data only. Zalo, WhatsApp and your banking app keep working on your own number. Grab, Be and Xanh SM work over data.
When should I install it?
At home, on wifi, a day or two before you fly. The plan only starts counting when your phone first connects in Vietnam.
What happens when my data runs out?
On the 3 GB plan and up you stay online: speed drops to 128 kbps, enough for messages and maps. The 1 GB plan stops when the data is used up. Need more? Order another plan in two minutes; it comes with its own QR code.
How does Unlimited work?
You get 1 GB a day at full speed. After that it's 5 Mbps until your daily allowance resets: enough for maps, socials and video calls. Then the next full-speed GB starts.
Can I keep my own SIM for calls and texts?
Yes. Your home SIM stays in, our eSIM does the data. Turn data roaming off for your home line and you won't get a surprise bill.
What if it doesn't work?
If it won't connect because of a fault on our side or the network's, we fix it with you. If we can't, you get your money back or a new eSIM, your choice. Never installed it? Full refund. The full rules are in our terms.
Travelling further?
One eSIM for the whole trip: these also cover Vietnam.
