The cheapest Malaysia plan that covers it, for the coverage selected by default. Your phone counts a little differently from the network, so keep some margin. More in our guide: how much data do I need?
Maxis and U Mobile
The Malaysia eSIM runs on Maxis and U Mobile, both with 5G. Your phone connects to the strongest and switches by itself.
The rankings move fast in Malaysia. In Opensignal’s July 2026 report, U Mobile won the most awards, including Consistent Quality and both speed awards, while CelcomDigi kept Coverage Experience. A report earlier, another operator came out on top. With two networks on one eSIM, you have a fallback if one is weak where you are.
Two plans on this page
- Malaysia: Maxis and U Mobile. The one for most trips.
- Brunei, Indonesia + Malaysia: for trips through Borneo that cross into Brunei, or that continue to Indonesia. It covers three countries, so it costs a lot more per GB. Only Malaysia and Indonesia? The Southeast Asia eSIM is usually the better deal, and it adds Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Where you’ll use it
- Kuala Lumpur: Grab, the train map and food apps. This is where most of your data goes.
- Penang and Melaka: street food, heritage walks and lots of photos.
- The Cameron Highlands and Taman Negara: long bus rides and jungle. Download your maps and bookings before you leave town.
- The islands (Langkawi, the Perhentians, Tioman): ferries and beaches. Keep your boat times offline.
How much data for Malaysia
Two weeks of normal use (maps, Grab, messages and socials) comes to about 8 to 9 GB, so 10 GB is the sweet spot. A month is closer to 20 GB. The table above has today’s prices.
On the 3 GB plan and bigger, you stay online at 128 kbps when the data runs out: slow, but enough for messages and maps.
Malaysia, Singapore and beyond
Malaysia is often combined with Singapore, Thailand or Bali. For those, the Southeast Asia eSIM covers five countries on one QR code. Our route planner checks whether that’s cheaper for your trip than separate ones.

Before you buy
Which network will I be on in Malaysia?
Maxis or U Mobile on the Malaysia eSIM. Your phone picks the strongest. The Southeast Asia and Asia eSIMs use CelcomDigi and Maxis in Malaysia instead.
Does it work in Borneo, in Sabah and Sarawak?
Yes, Sabah and Sarawak are part of Malaysia, and the eSIM uses the same networks there. Going on to Brunei? Pick Brunei, Indonesia + Malaysia in the buy box.
Do I get a Malaysian phone number?
No, it's data only. WhatsApp and your banking app keep working on your own number.
When should I install it?
At home, on wifi, a day or two before you fly. The plan only starts counting when your phone first connects in Malaysia.
What happens when my data runs out?
On the 3 GB plan and up you stay online: speed drops to 128 kbps, enough for messages and maps. The 1 GB plan stops when the data is used up. Need more? Order another plan in two minutes; it comes with its own QR code.
How does Unlimited work?
You get 1 GB a day at full speed. After that it's 5 Mbps until your daily allowance resets: enough for maps, socials and video calls. Then the next full-speed GB starts.
Can I keep my own SIM for calls and texts?
Yes. Your home SIM stays in, our eSIM does the data. Turn data roaming off for your home line and you won't get a surprise bill.
What if it doesn't work?
If it won't connect because of a fault on our side or the network's, we fix it with you. If we can't, you get your money back or a new eSIM, your choice. Never installed it? Full refund. The full rules are in our terms.
Travelling further?
One eSIM for the whole trip: these also cover Malaysia.
Or a local eSIM for the next country in Asia.
