How much data for Laos?

Light is maps, messages and ride apps (about 0.25 GB a day). Normal adds socials and stories (about 0.6 GB a day). Heavy is streaming, hotspot and work: that's unlimited.

The cheapest Asia plan that covers it, for the coverage selected by default. Your phone counts a little differently from the network, so keep some margin. More in our guide: how much data do I need?

How Laos works on our eSIM

Laos doesn’t have its own plan in our shop. It’s covered by the Asia eSIM, which also works in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and 12 more countries. For most travellers that’s a bonus rather than a compromise: almost nobody visits Laos alone. You come in from Thailand over the Friendship Bridge or by slow boat, or from Vietnam, and you leave the same way.

The buy box on this page sells the Asia eSIM. Prefer more countries? Asia 28 also covers Laos, plus places like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Australia.

Where you’ll have signal

On the Asia eSIM, Laos runs on ETL and Lao Telecom. They don’t reach as far as Unitel, the network with the widest coverage outside the cities, and Unitel isn’t on this plan. We’d rather tell you that here than have you find out in Nong Khiaw.

What that means on the ground:

  • Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng: you’ll be fine in town.
  • The slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang: long stretches without signal on any network. Download offline maps, music and your guesthouse booking before you board.
  • The far north and the Plain of Jars: patchy at best, on every network. Plan as if you’ll be offline between towns.

How much data for Laos

Laos is a slower country, and your phone use usually follows. A week of normal use comes to about 4 GB; two weeks to about 8 or 9. If Laos is part of a bigger trip, size the plan for the whole trip, not just Laos. The table above has today’s prices.

One thing to know: the Asia plan stops when the data is used up. It doesn’t slow down. If you’re in doubt, take the next size up.

The route through Laos

Most people do Laos as part of the Banana Pancake Trail: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. That page compares one eSIM for the whole loop with separate ones, at today’s prices.

The rules in full

Before you buy

Why isn't there a Laos-only eSIM?

Our network partner doesn't offer a plan for Laos alone yet. The Asia eSIM covers Laos and 15 more countries, which suits most trips anyway: few people fly in and out of Laos without crossing another border.

Which network will I be on in Laos?

ETL or Lao Telecom. Unitel, the network with the widest coverage in Laos, isn't on this plan. In the towns that makes little difference; in remote areas it can.

Does it work on the slow boat?

In the villages along the way, sometimes. In between, there are long stretches without signal on any network. Download what you need before you board.

When should I install it?

At home, on wifi, a day or two before you fly. The plan only starts counting when your phone first connects in Laos.

What happens when my data runs out?

This plan stops when the data is used up. Need more? Order another plan in two minutes; it comes with its own QR code.

How does Unlimited work?

You get 1 GB a day at full speed. After that it's 5 Mbps until your daily allowance resets: enough for maps, socials and video calls. Then the next full-speed GB starts.

Can I keep my own SIM for calls and texts?

Yes. Your home SIM stays in, our eSIM does the data. Turn data roaming off for your home line and you won't get a surprise bill.

What if it doesn't work?

If it won't connect because of a fault on our side or the network's, we fix it with you. If we can't, you get your money back or a new eSIM, your choice. Never installed it? Full refund. The full rules are in our terms.
