How much data for Thailand?

Light is maps, messages and ride apps (about 0.25 GB a day). Normal adds socials and stories (about 0.6 GB a day). Heavy is streaming, hotspot and work: that's unlimited.

The cheapest Thailand plan that covers it. Your phone counts a little differently from the network, so keep some margin. More in our guide: how much data do I need?

Which network you’re on

The Thailand eSIM runs on AIS and True Move, the two networks that cover most of the country. Both have 5G. Your phone connects to whichever is strongest where you are and switches by itself.

Which one is better? Rankings change from report to report. In Opensignal’s June 2025 report, AIS scored highest for consistent quality. AIS says its 5G reaches more than 95% of Thailand’s population; that’s AIS’s own figure. For you it means this: with both on one eSIM, you’re not stuck if one of them is weak.

Tip: signal gone on a beach or in a guesthouse? Go to your phone’s network settings, turn off automatic selection and pick the other network. It’s the fix that works most often.

Bangkok, the north, the islands

Most trips through Thailand look alike: a few days in Bangkok, north to Chiang Mai and Pai, then south to the islands. The eSIM works the same everywhere, but your data use doesn’t.

  • Bangkok is where you use the most: Grab, the BTS map, food delivery, translating menus. Plan on the higher end of your daily estimate.
  • The north has long bus and minivan rides, the road to Pai included. Download offline maps and your playlist before you leave Chiang Mai.
  • The islands are where people film the most. Stories and video eat data fast; if that’s you, look at Unlimited.

Thailand only, or more?

Most people who fly into Bangkok don’t stay in Thailand. Going on to Laos, Vietnam or Cambodia? Then one regional eSIM is usually cheaper than a Thai one plus another per country. Our Banana Pancake Trail page does the maths for the classic loop, and our route planner works for any combination.

Going to Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia instead? The Southeast Asia eSIM covers those with Thailand.

Unlimited or a data pack?

A data pack is the better deal for most trips. A month of maps and messages fits in 10 GB; add socials and stories and you’re closer to 20 GB. The table above has the prices. Unlimited gives you 1 GB a day at full speed and then 5 Mbps until the next day, which is enough for video calls but not for a hotspot for a whole dorm. Take Unlimited if you work from your laptop or film a lot, and only for the days you need it.

The rules in full

Before you buy

Which network will my phone use in Thailand?

AIS or True Move. Your phone picks the strongest signal by itself. If it's weak somewhere, choose the other one by hand in your network settings.

Do I get a Thai phone number?

No. It's data only. WhatsApp, LINE, iMessage and your banking app keep working on your own number, and ride apps like Grab and Bolt work over data.

Does it work on the islands?

It uses the same AIS and True Move networks as a Thai SIM, so where they have signal, you have signal. Out at sea and deep in national parks, every network drops out now and then.

When should I install it?

At home, on wifi, a day or two before you fly. The plan only starts counting when your phone first connects in Thailand.

What happens when my data runs out?

On the 3 GB plan and up you stay online: speed drops to 128 kbps, enough for messages and maps. The 1 GB plan stops when the data is used up. Need more? Order another plan in two minutes; it comes with its own QR code.

How does Unlimited work?

You get 1 GB a day at full speed. After that it's 5 Mbps until your daily allowance resets: enough for maps, socials and video calls. Then the next full-speed GB starts.

Can I keep my own SIM for calls and texts?

Yes. Your home SIM stays in, our eSIM does the data. Turn data roaming off for your home line and you won't get a surprise bill.

What if it doesn't work?

If it won't connect because of a fault on our side or the network's, we fix it with you. If we can't, you get your money back or a new eSIM, your choice. Never installed it? Full refund. The full rules are in our terms.
